THE LAB
The Lab is more than just a one-day training — it’s a gateway into the world of production. Created for both newcomers and those wanting to sharpen their skills, this immersive experience combines classroom insight, real hands-on practice, and open, honest conversation about what it takes to succeed in our industry.
You’ll learn the skills, language, and expectations of a production assistant — not through guesswork or years of trial and error, but in a single, empowering day that’s designed to fast-track your confidence and clarity. Come curious. Ask questions. There are no dumb ones here — only people serious about doing the work and doing it well.
The Lab isn’t just for you — it’s for the crews and productions that need sharp, capable talent now! That’s why Production Lab is officially recognized by the Kansas City Film Office as an approved apprentice training under the Missouri tax incentive requirements.
And because no one dreams of staying a PA forever, this training also includes real strategies and real guidance for moving up into departments you love, and careers you’re ready to build.
You’ll walk away not just trained, but plugged into a growing network of working professionals and productions looking for people exactly like you.

THE TRAINING
-
You will gain a clear overview of Production Assistant responsibilities across narrative, commercial, and unscripted projects. You'll learn how sets are structured, the key roles and departments involved, and where you fit into the bigger picture. Most importantly, you'll understand why P.A.s are essential to the success of every production.
-
Learn exactly what to bring — and what to know — to walk onto your first set with confidence, and every set after that. We’ll cover how to read call sheets, maps, and schedules, along with smart questions to ask and helpful agreements to have in place. You’ll also get insider tips and recommended tools to set yourself up for long-term success.
-
You’ll learn how a day on set actually runs, giving you real context for where you fit in and how to confidently find your place. We’ll cover everything from set logistics and zones to lingo, etiquette, expectations, and confidentiality. No two sets are the same, so you’ll also walk away with practical tools to help you adapt and thrive, even when things feel uncertain.
-
You’ll get hands-on training with real walkies and surveillances. We’ll cover how they work, understanding the various channels, walkie etiquette, and the lingo you need to know. You’ll run through realistic communication, check-ins, channel switching, and simulated calls — all to help you get comfortable with fast, clear communication. Walkies are all about urgency, clarity, and respecting the chain of command, and you’ll leave feeling confident using them on any set.
-
You’ll learn what a lockup is, why it matters, and the important role you play in making it happen. We’ll walk through how to properly set and hold a lockup, and you’ll get hands-on practice with real callouts so you can show up prepared and confident when it counts.
-
You’ll get a solid understanding of the key paperwork you’ll come across on set — so from day one, you’ll know what it is, how to navigate it, and where you might be able to step in and help. We’ll walk through everything from scripts, call sheets, and schedules to one-liners, Exhibit Gs, skins, DOODs, release forms, NDAs, production reports, and sides — giving you the confidence to handle it all like a pro.
-
At the end of the training, we want to leave you with real, practical advice you can actually use — how to not only get hired, but how to get hired again, and how to move through this industry the right way. We’ll talk through the do’s and don’ts, how to carry yourself socially and professionally, and how to make smart moves toward the departments you’re most excited about. Because we don’t just want you to work — we want you to grow.
-
You’ll leave with a high-quality physical workbook — something real you can hold onto, filled with everything we cover in training and even more in-depth info to help you keep learning long after the Lab ends.
You’ll also get our P.A. Survival Kit list (with links), a certificate of completion, and private access to the Production Lab online forum — a space where you can connect with past graduates, ask questions, share wins, find job leads, and just feel supported as you keep moving forward.
Plus, your name gets added to our official graduate list, which we share with productions who are looking for sharp, trained P.A.s.

FAQs
ARE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE?
Absolutely. This industry should be accessible to all, and we’re committed to breaking down outdated ideas about who’s “qualified” to work in production. The Production Lab Scholarship is available at production-lab.com/scholarship. You can also find out more below the FAQ section.
If you, or someone you know could benefit from the training but may not have the means to enroll, have them fill out the application, or shoot us a direct email to chat further.
WHERE IS THE TRAINING HELD?
Training is currently held in Kansas City. While we do not have a permanent location, trainings are all held in a classroom-style environment, and the exact location of each training is disclosed with registration if not sooner.
WILL I GET A JOB WHEN I’M DONE WITH THE TRAINING?
With 99% certainty, we can actually say yes. The 1% left is up to you. Participants who actively pursue the job resources we provide will find work fairly quickly. We are comfortable becoming not only a reference for you, but also providing your contact to productions that seek production assistants through us directly. That being said, you are not guaranteed anything. Our goal is to help you become the kind of PA productions WANT to hire - someone who’s prepared, reliable, and ready to hit the ground running.
WILL ANY OF MY TRAINING BE ON A REAL SET?
Unfortunately no. It is simply not possible to provide our training on an active set due to liability. However, we take this into consideration and tailor our trainings specifically noting efforts in creating set-like atmospheres, or being very open and direct with how things will be, versus asking you to simply imagine them with broad information.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT THE DAY TO BE LIKE?
Training is a 6-7 hour day, with a built in lunch time. We will start in a classroom-like environment, then move on to real hands-on training with walkie radios and surveillances. We will practice real “lock ups”, real “call outs”, all while maintaining an open-discussion environment. Questions are highly encouraged. Curiosity and willingness to learn are key components to your participation.
HOW OFTEN ARE LABS HELD?
Production Labs are currently aimed to happen 2-3 times a year. Depending on demand, we will always be open to hosting more.
Can production lab help me in networks outside of Kansas city?
The Production Lab community reaches far beyond Kansas City — so if you decide to move or grow into bigger markets, we’ve got your back.
Locations we are currently networked within include: Los Angeles, New York, Hawaii, Chicago, Atlanta, Austin, Oklahoma, Florida, Utah, Washington, and Connecticut. If you need help in these locations, we’ll help connect you with resources, guidance, and leads to support your next steps.
Does production lab offer trainings outside of production assistant work?
Production Lab is currently focused on production-specific training (PA, AD, Coordinating, Producing). We are very open and interested in helping other departments grow and train. If you would like to help co-host a Lab for your specific department (camera, art, wardrobe, etc.) we would love to speak with you further and potentially collaborate. The entire foundation of Production Lab was built on the opportunity to give people the opportunity to learn from the best, in a concentrated and intentional way. Please reach out to productionlabinfo@gmail.com if you’d like to discuss this further.
IF I’M UNABLE TO ATTEND THE LAB, after registering, CAN I REQUEST A REFUND?
No - however, your payment is fully transferable to a future training date, or to another participant.
SCHOLARSHIP
We’re committed to making Production Lab accessible for all.
“On set, every second counts —
and having someone who’s untrained can slow things down or even create unsafe situations. I’ve seen new PAs show up eager and ready, but they don’t always get the space to ask questions or learn the basics. Production Lab gives them that space. It teaches the stuff most of us had to figure out the hard way — how a set really works, what’s expected, and how to move with confidence. Honestly, I wish something like this existed when I was starting out.”
- Jordan Friday (Producer - Kansas City)
“for a set to function —
in a truly collaborative way, set etiquette needs to be understood and respected. Clear expectations keep everyone safe while capturing the best content possible. Production Lab is a great way to quickly and efficiently begin a career on set!”
- Michael Lopez (Producer)
“My first day on set —
I was handed a walkie I didn’t know how to use, and a callsheet I wasn’t entirely sure how to interpret. I spent years learning the hard way, fumbling through expectations, too intimidated to speak up or ask the questions that could have helped me grow faster, or be actually helpful to the crews and sets I was supporting. Production Lab is my way of giving others what I never had: clear, honest, practical training before you ever step foot on set, or to help sharpen your current skills on set. Production lab provides a zero-ego space with open dialogue, where anyone with a dream to work in production can attain real skills and be immediately connected to a network rooting for them to succeed.”
- Natalie Cordray (Producer / Founder of Production Lab)
THE FINE PRINT
You must be 17 years old to attend. You will not be hireable on an actual production until you turn 18, but we see no problem with being prepared for when that day comes.
If you are unable to attend the training, for any reason, your payment is transferable for a future training date or to another participant; however, it is not refundable.
